Lumitec Lighting Systems add spectacularity to boat lighting

Late summer and early autumn is a great time for boating: the weather is still warm and the evenings are cozy. Good boat lighting, beyond the obligatory navigation lights, is something to invest in at this time of year. American company Lumitec has a solution for all your boat lighting needs.

Have you ever thought that, for example, work lights and docking lights, general boat lighting, cabin lighting and destination lights not only create a pleasant atmosphere, but are also a safety factor. Going ashore in a new destination is a tedious task without proper lighting and a little twinkle in the cabin of a big boat won’t do you any good.

LED-based lighting

Since its foundation in 2007, Lumitec has grown from a small start-up to become a leading international manufacturer of LED luminaires. The company supplies underwater, interior and navigation lighting to more than 250 boat manufacturers worldwide.

The LED lights are based on a light-emitting diode that comes on instantly at full power, does not dim in use and does not contain mercury or other environmental toxins. What’s more, LEDs consume a fraction of the power of conventional luminaires.

Lumitec offers the boater complete lighting systems, rather than individual luminaires. There is an almost infinite number of different systems that can be created, and even within them the functionality can be changed. In the cockpit or on the rear deck, there is no longer a need for separate bright or colorful lights for different purposes, but the color of the lights can be adjusted by the controller to the desired color.

At the heart of Lumitec’s fully digital lighting control system is a central unit called Poco. It allows you to control all your Lumitec lights at the touch of a button from any compatible multifunctional device via Bluetooth or from a smart device connected to the system via the Poco app. The system uses the PLI (Power Line Instruction) protocol, which requires no separate wiring and all control data goes through the power line.

Visibility and usability

Often, especially on older boats, the lighting is poor or non-existent. LEDs can be used on almost any boat to create lighting that not only looks good, but also increases the usability of the boat, as the lighting can be installed either flush or surface mounted and the only limit is your imagination.

It is also worth mentioning that Lumitec offers the possibility of completely new solutions without the need to modify the electrical system of the boat. The Poco central unit of the lighting system can be connected to the display of almost all navigation devices (Garmin, Raymarine, Lowrance, B&G, Simrad).

The connection is made via ethernet cable, but some Garmin devices (GpsMap) also work via Wi-Fi. Lighting is controlled from the control bar on the display of the device. Updates to the system are done via Wi-Fi on the computer.

Lumitec products are used on many of the world’s finest boats, Bering Sea fishing fleets rely on Lumitec’s powerful spotlights, and US Special Forces use NVG (Night Vision Goggle) compatible lights. So why not try Lumitec to improve your own boat lighting?
